When you’re looking to purchase a tent that the entire family can use, there’s no hard and fast rule for the tent that will work best. Rather, it really depends on your specific family. If you know that your family is going to need a lot of room, choose a tent that is designed to accommodate one or two more people than it needs to. After all, even family tents are designed to be economical with space. Therefore, a four person tent might more comfortably fit three or even two people.
Also make sure that everyone is going to be okay with sleeping in the same tent. If you and your spouse or significant other want some privacy, maybe a little two-man tent for you would be best. Then, all the kids can have their own tent. This way, you can have time together as a family at the campsite and around the fire, but you can also have some private space. After all, even the closest family needs some time apart, and this applies at home as well as your camping trip.
